September / October / November / December / Top / Bottom

Nov. 26 - Final Exam: The PHYS 231 final exam is scheduled for:

Saturday, Dec. 8
18:00 - 21:00
EME 1101

Try the past final exams at the bottom of the page for practice. Note that we did not cover Thevenin equivalent circuits this year. Therefore, you're not expected to be able to solve the following problems:
2012 - #6
2013 - #3(c)
2014 - #1(a)

Nov. 26 - Formula Sheet: You can prepare your own formula sheet for the final exam. You can bring one 8.5" x 11" letter-sized piece of paper to the exam with anything written or printed on it. You can use both sides of the paper.
Nov. 15 - Assignment #6: Digital Electronics:
Assignment #6
Due Monday, Nov. 26 @ 10:30 am
Nov. 5 - Assignment #5: Diode Circuits:
Assignment #5
Due Wednesday, Nov. 14 @ 10:30 am
Nov. 5 - Reading Assign: Eggleston Chapter 8.1 to 8.10 inclusive & 8.13, 8.14.
Nov. 5 - USB Slides (.pdf): Here are the digital communication slides from in class.

September / October / November / December / Top / Bottom

Oct. 29 - CAP Lecture: UBCO Physics is excited to announce the launch of the 2019 CAP Undergraduate Lecture Tour, which features excellent presentations on a variety of modern topics in physics.

We are hoping to host a distinguished physicist here at UBC Okanagan to give a presentation on some aspect of current physics research. The presentation will be designed for an audience of undergraduate physics students. We want you to play a major role is selecting the speaker that will come to the Okanagan!

To view the list of speakers and topics, visit the following website. There is a list of 26 potential speakrs!

If you're interested in helping us select the speaker that will be most appealing to you, please review the list of potential speakers and identify those that you'd be interested in seeing. Email me your preferred list of speakers by Monday, Nov. 5.

The 2019 Lecture Tour schedule will be confirmed by the end of November, and lectures may take place any time during term 2 of the 2018/2019 academic year.

Oct. 26 - Reading Assign: Eggleston Ch. 3 & 4.1 to 4.3
Oct. 26 - Silicon Slides (.pdf): Here are the covalent bonds in Si slides that will be shown in Monday's class.
Oct. 26 - Assignment #4: Op-Amps:
Assignment #4
Due Monday, Nov. 5 @ 10:30 am
Oct. 23 - Another Physics Talk: Mir Faizal will give a talk about his research on pre-big bang cosmology. The talk will be held:

Monday, Oct. 29 from 14:30 - 15:30 in EME 1202.

All are welcome. See this poster for the title and abstract.

Oct. 17 - Physics Talks: Two physics undergraduates will give talks about summer research projects that they recently completed. The talks will be held:

Wednesday, Oct. 31 (Hallowe'en!) from 15:30 - 16:30 in SCI 396.

All are welcome. See this poster for the titles and abstracts.

Oct. 11 - Supplemental Notes: Analysis of the frequency response of an underdamped series LRC-circuit. These notes show that the complex analysis techniques that we developed make the solution of this problem very straightforward. It is possible to solve this problem without relying on our complex analysis techniques. However, these's a lot of alegbra to get through before arriving at the final answers!

These notes are provided as supplemental material for the interested student. It is not required reading.

Oct. 10 - Assignment #3: Complex Numbers & Impedance:
Assignment #3
Due Monday, Oct. 22 @ 10:30 am
Oct. 10 - Final Exam: The PHYS 231 final exam is scheduled for:

Saturday, Dec. 8
18:00 - 21:00
EME 1101

Oct. 5 - Physics Talk: I will give a talk on:

Monday, Oct. 15 from 14:00 - 15:00 in FIP 124.

All are welcome. See this poster for the title and abstract.

Oct. 5 - Reading Assign: Eggleston Chapter 6
Oct. 5 - Undergraduate Research: An information session about undergraduate student summer research opportunities will be held on Nov. 15 from 17:30 - 18:30 in ART 114. See this poster and/or this poster for more details.
Oct. 1 - Taylor Series of Sine: Taylor series approximation of the sine function.

September / October / November / December / Top / Bottom

Sept. 24 - Assignment #2: Inductors, Matching, & Fitting:
Assignment #2
Due Wednesday, Oct. 10 @ 10:30 am
Sept. 24 - Supplemental Notes: Complete analysis of the transient response of an underdamped series LRC-circuit. Includes comparison to mechanical system of a mass on a spring and a full energy analysis.

These notes are provided as supplemental material for the interested student. It is not required reading.

Sept. 17 - Reading Assign: Eggleston 2.4-2.7
Sept. 17 - Assignment #1: Error Analysis & Review:
Assignment #1
Due Wednesday, Sept. 26 @ 10:30 am
Sept. 12 - Lecutre Slides: Here are the error analysis slides presented in class.
August 21 - Practice Assignment: Here is a practice assignment that reviews circuit concepts studied in first-year physics.

I will not collect and grade this assignment, it is for your own practice. The answers are given after each problem. If you struggle with any of the problems, you are strongly encouraged to review the relevant concepts in your first-year textbook or in Eggleston's book.

August 21 - Reading Assign: Eggleston 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3
(Predominantly review)
Least Squares Fitting (.pdf): Here is a good introduction to
Weighted least squares fits.

This document also comes from the Phys 121 lab manual used at Case Western Reserve University. This link will take you to the complete manual.
