THE PROFILE OF ST. JOHN’S HEALTH CENTRE FUNSI

ADDRESS: P.OBOX 13, FUNSI WA EAST DISTRICT. UPPER WEST REGION, GHANA

LOCATION: The facility is situated at Funsi the District Capital of WA EAST DISTRICT in the UPPER WEST REGION in the Northern part of Ghana. It is about 140km away from the regional capital WA. Funsi is bounded by Welebelle in Sissala East to the north, Bawiesibai in Sissala East to the east, Janpasi to the west and Yaala No 1 in Wa East to the south.
The facility was built in 1989 by the Catholic Diocese of WA to care for the health needs of the people of Funsi and the surrounding communities. It belongs to the diocese of WA


It is serving 9 communities with the population of 6443 and it is the district hospital designate. As a district hospital it will serve about 22 communities.
STRUCTURES: Out Patient Department with consultation room, laboratory, dispensary counselling room. There is also a cool room for storage of vaccines, Eye unit, a maternity unit, and a theatre, a male and female ward with eight beds each.

SERVICES PROVIDED: OPD services, laboratory, maternal and child health care, ophthalmic, outreach programmes, PMTCT, CT service, familyplanning, school health, adolescence health care, an ambulance service etc and it is 24 Hours.

STAFF STRENGTH: The staffs are at post 1 Midwife, 1 Registered General nurse, 2 Community Health Nurses, 1 Laboratory Assistant, 3 Auxiliary Nurses, 1 Clerk, 2 orderlies, 1 Field Technician, 1 Driver, 2 Labourers and a Night Security

CHPS ZONE: There is 1 operational CHPS compound with 5 staffs that is 1 Community Health Officer, 1 Community Health Nurse, 2 Auxiliary Nurses and a Night Security. The second compound has been completed and yet to be launched.
The area is bless with so many rivers without bridges leading to most of the communities been without health care services during the rainy season. The district road network is bad so most client arrival at the facility in a worse condition and in a worst condition at the next referral point if client needs to see a medical Officer or requires a surgical procedure.

The district is not connected to the national electrical grade so the facility depends on generators for light and is also use for pumping water. There is a solar freeze use for the storage of vaccines and other medicines.

During a familiarization visit by the executive secretary to the facility, the in cahrge expressed the need for a nutrition officer. In this way we can intensify our nutrition education she said.In response to the request, the ES said it is already in the strategic plan of DHS to train nutrition officers for the health institutions if there is funding opportunity.

what is new?

The health facility is to be up graded to a district hospital for Wa-east. At the moment there is renovation work going on sponsored by the OPEC Fund with partnership with Ghana health Service.
