Technology Sandbox

The CTL is creating a sandbox environment that will feature a variety of technologies to explore. The purpose of the sandbox is to make technology and Web 2.0 tools readily available so that faculty can experiment and investigate potential teaching and learning applications. Our eLearning specialists are available for consultation and discussion about how these technologies can be mindfully integrated using sound pedagogical practices to enhance student learning and community in and outside of your classrooms.  Come try out the iMac or PC and some of the specialized software or Web 2.0 applications.  Technologies available for short term loan include  video cameras, podcasting equipment,  iPads,  iPod Touch, and a RIM Playbook. Please contact Vania Chan or Janine Hirtz if you are interested in working, playing, or experimenting with the sandbox tools.

Carolyn Labun leads new Centre for Scholarly Communication

Carolyn Labun has been appointed director of the new Centre for Scholarly Communication. The Centre is a two-year pilot program offering graduate students opportunities to learn advanced writing skills and providing support for sharing research findings in the digital world.

“The goal of the Centre is to help these upper-level and graduate students develop the skills to communicate their message and knowledge, not only to other scholars, but also to members of the wider community who will benefit from our students’ work,” says Labun, who joined UBC’s School of Engineering in 2005 to teach academic and technical communication to undergraduate students in Applied Science.

Since 2005, Labun has worked with graduate students on a variety of communication-related topics, contributing to the development of a course in graduate communications. Labun's office and meeting spaces for the new Centre for Scholarly Communication are located LIB 101, on the first floor of the Library building.

What's After Web CT Vista??
Learning Management System (LMS) Selection

By January 2013, Blackboard will cease supporting WebCT Vista. Together with your participation during the evaluation process, UBC has chosen Blackboard Learn 9.1 to be the university’s next learning management system.

The implementation of Blackboard Learn 9.1 is expected to take three years. In Summer 2011 the project will be initiated. During Fall 2011, more detailed planning, consultation, selection of a pilot group, development of training and documentation, and installation of the software, will occur. A pilot, comprising a limited number of courses, is planned for January 2012 (Winter Session, Term 2 of 2011-12).

Finally in May 2012 (Summer Session, 2012-13), the UBC Okanagan campus will move all courses to Blackboard Learn.
