Resource of the Month

Kaltura This new service will be available prior to the start of the fall 2013 semester and will be closed integrated into the Connect environment to allow media content such as videos and mp3 files to be easily associated with courses as well as student assignments. For more information please contact Bruce Young at 250-807-9027.

Scholarly Teaching
Each month we will post a journal article about research into teaching and learning. Please take time to read and reflect on the readings as they may impact your teaching and learning situation. We will be hosting a discussion board through a connect shell where you can add your comments and also suggest other articles of interest. If you wish to be added to this Blackboard Connect shell please email Heather Hurren at the Centre with your CWL ID.

NEWS!...........FOR YOUR TEACHING ASSISTANT!

"UBC-O Teaching Scholars Credentialing Program"
Foundations Credentialing Certification

1. Pedagogical Discussion and Training. Participants will attend the Instructional Skills Seminar.
UBC Okanagan Instructional Skills Seminar (ISS) is a 12 hour program. Each ISS ideally is comprised of 4-6 participants. Participants review basic ideas about teaching and learning and are encouraged to try new instructional strategies within the safe environment of the group. The ISS is a developmental activity and involves peer and self-evaluation.

During the ISS, students have an opportunity to work closely with peers to improve each other’s teaching and practice a variety of instructional techniques. They will practice using learning objectives, plan and conduct short lesson plans, and give and receive constructive feedback.

In the ISS, each participant takes on the roles of both instructor and learner. Each participant prepares and conducts 2 ten minute mini-lessons and when delivering the lesson becomes the instructor. When someone else in the group is the instructor, the other participants are the learners. Immediately following each mini-lesson, learners give the instructor feedback on the effectiveness of the mini-lesson. This feedback takes 2 forms: written feedback (using sheets provided in this resource package) and verbal feedback guided by the facilitator. Mini-lessons are recorded and participants are encouraged to review their recording prior to their next mini-lesson.
