Equilibrium (Chapter 6, 5 hrs)
· nature of chemical equilibrium
· equilibrium constants, significance and calculation of Q and K, Kc and Kp
· Le Chatelier’s Principle


Acids and Bases (Chapters 7 – 8, 9 hrs)
· definitions, acid and base strengths
· conjugate acids/bases, autoionization of water, pH and pOH,
· relative acid/base strengths, Ka and Kb
· polyprotic acids, salt hydrolysis
· common ion effect, buffers, titrations, indicators


Thermodynamics (Chapters 9 – 10, 9 hrs)
· definitions, energy (E) and enthalpy (H), First Law
· calorimetry, enthalpy and temperature changes, enthalpy and reactions
· Hess’ Law, standard enthalpies of formation
· Entropy (S), spontaneity , Second Law
· Gibbs’ Free Energy (G), Third Law
· DG, spontaneity, temperature dependence of K, van’t Hoff equation


Organic Chemistry (Ege, 15 hours)
· Nomenclature of hydrocarbons and functional groups
· Arrow pushing, Reaction mechanisms, Lewis acids and Bases (Ege Ch 3)
· Conformational analysis and stereochemistry (Ege 5.8, 6.1 – 6.3)
· Nucleophilic substitution reactions (SN1 and SN2 mechanisms) (Ege 7.1 – 7.3 and 7.5A,B)
