Open Classroom Week

October 26th to 30th, 2015
The concept of the open classroom will allow faculty members to observe their colleagues teaching to gain insights into teaching and learning processes. Volunteers would be expected to teach their regularly scheduled class, but be open to having other faculty observe the teaching and learning processes that day. Whether you are teaching traditionally, using flexible learning strategies, or trying some new techniques, this would be your opportunity to showcase your skills. Faculty are interested in observing how their colleagues use clickers, begin class, end class, use interactivity for student engagement, etc.

To open your classroom, please fill out the form by October 16th.

Contact Heather Hurren at 250-807-9288 or heather.hurren@ubc.ca if you would like more information.

Vania Chan received a Staff Award of Excellence at this year’s town hall! Vania has been an e-Learning Instructional Support Specialist at the CTL since 2009. Read more about the awards here. Congrats to all.

The first session (October 16) is designed to give participants the opportunity to learn practical skills and knowledge in both developing and teaching an online course. A variety of technologies and strategies to facilitate participant learning through interactions, content delivery, and assignments will be demonstrated.

The second session (October 23) will involve a hands-on working session where the participants will work on designing components for their future online courses. The workshop facilitator will be available to provide individual and group help as needed.

Presentations Regarding ‘Research Ethics at UBC’ and ‘Using RISe’ Available

Would your faculty benefit from having a brief refresher on research ethics at UBC O?

Are you looking for a guest speaker for a faculty meeting and would like the opportunity to meet Lisa, the administrator for research ethics at UBC Okanagan?

Are you a faculty member that would like a speaker to come to your class to introduce the topic of research ethics? This is often done for course-based research projects where the faculty member has submitted a research ethics application and the students are required to complete the TCPS.

Does your faculty have a group of graduate students that would benefit from an introduction to RISe session?

If so, please contact Lisa Shearer. She is available to speak at faculty meetings, to classes, and to conduct training sessions on using RISe and completing research ethics applications. As well, the BREB co-Chairs are able to attend and address any questions as well. Sessions and presentations can be customized to the attendees.

Several faculty took advantage of this opportunity last year and it was well received.
