Dr. Shahria Alam is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at The University of British Columbiaís Okanagan campus. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Western Ontario in 2008. His research interests include sustainable construction material through recycling/reusing of industrial wastes, and smart materials for structural applications and seismic rehabilitation. Dr. Alam has published more than 40 peer reviewed journal papers in these topics and is the recipient of many national and international awards. Since joining UBC in 2009, he has successfully generated more than $2.3 million extramural funding from various government organizations and industries. He has established two research labs (Smart Materials & Structures lab and Structural Health Monitoring lab) at UBC-O as a principal investigator through 2 NSERC Research Tools & Instruments (RTI) grants, 1 Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and 3 NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) grants. His research group consists of one research engineer, one post-doc, 11 PhD students and 6 MASc students along with several undergraduate research students. His research group has patented 3 innovative technologies/processes related to sustainable construction material and structural components. Currently he is serving as a Chair of the Concrete Structures sub-Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), and also a member in several international code committees.
