Shortcourse
Modeling Environmental Extremes
David Walshaw and Lee Fawcett, Newcastle University, UK
Sunday June 8, 2008 at UBC O from 8:30 to 5:30
In this one day course we provide an introduction and a basic grounding in the major methods and modeling techniques involved in the
modern-day analysis of extremes. The emphasis is very much on the practical modeling of extremes of environmental variables, including extreme
weather. We will present the theory underlying the methods and models as much as is necessary for understanding. However we will concentrate on
the practicalities of modeling, using the statistical software R, and associated packages for extreme value analysis. This software is all
freely available worldwide, and has become a standard tool-kit for such analysis. The course will be appropriate for graduate students or young
researchers with a background in statistical science.
See the Registration page for information on fees. The short course fee includes continental breakfast prior to the
course, coffee breaks and lunch.
